7 Major Scale Positions on Guitar

Use the interactive tab player to practise all seven 3-notes-per-string major scale positions with a steady tempo.

Major Scale 3NPS Practice Player

This page provides a simple practice tool for the seven 3-notes-per-string positions of the major scale. Each position is written to be played ascending and then descending so you can practise the full shape before moving on to the next one.

The tab player includes tempo and loop controls, allowing you to repeat each position as many times as needed while keeping a steady pulse. This makes it ideal for focused practise.

A good training approach is to loop a single position and play it around 5 to 10 times before moving on. If you practise the shapes like this regularly over a few weeks or months, the patterns will gradually become internalised and much easier to recall on the fretboard.

The examples on this page are shown in C major so the layout is easy to follow. However, it is important to practise the same shapes in other keys as well. This helps you stop thinking in terms of individual frets and start recognising the interval structure of the scale, which is what allows these patterns to work anywhere on the neck.

How to Practise the Seven Major Scale Positions

Start slowly enough to play every note cleanly. Name the root notes as you play, and look for the shared notes between neighbouring positions. Once each shape feels comfortable, connect two adjacent positions before attempting all seven as one continuous route across the neck.
